Put simply, ionisation is required when grounding is not possible, this includes:
- Process Essential Insulators (materials that cannot be grounded by nature and cannot be replaced with an ESD safe alternative)
- Isolated Conductors (A conductor that comes into contacts with ESD Sensitive Devices that cannot be grounded or equipotentially bonded together. Per IEC TR 61340-5-2, 5.3.3.3 Isolated conductors, "Examples of possible isolated conductors are; test probes, bond wires, hand tools and transport rollers).
- In area where high voltages are used (as an alternative to personal grounding... Learn More)
One other use for ionisation is to suppress electrostatic attraction (ESA). Point-of-use compressed gas ionisers neutralise charges that otherwise cause contamination or visual defects by blowing ionised air so that the contaminant particles are not instantly attracted back to the surface.
Air Ionisers work by creating a large number of positively and negatively charged ions and dispersing them via their air source. The compressed air or fan is then directed at the surface that requires neutralising. The ions from the ioniser then attract to the opposite polarity ions on the surface. As a result, the static electricity that had built up on the surface is neutralised. Ionisers are required to be balance in order to neutralise efficiently and not build up a charge on the surface instead.
Ionisation can neutralise static charges on an insulator or charged conductor in a matter of seconds, thereby reducing their potential to cause ESD damage.
Per IEC61340-5-1, INTRODUCTION, "Necessary insulators in the environment cannot lose their electrostatic charge by attachment to ground. Ionisation systems provide neutralization of charges on these necessary insulators (circuit board materials and some device packages are examples of necessary insulators)."

Types of Desco Europe Ionisers
Single Fan or Benchtop Ioniser
Also known as workstation ionisers, these come in different shapes and sizes. As workstation space is incredibly valuable, many users prefer the smaller units. Some bench top ionisers can even be suspended above the bench using a flexible mounting arm. A real benefit of bench top ionisers is the fact that they can easily be moved between workstations. The smaller units can also be fitted inside machinery such as a pick and place machine.
2 or 3 Fan Overhead Ioniser
Overhead ionisation was established to solve the problem of items on a bench blocking the flow of ionised air. Overhead ionisers have a unique hanging capability and are suspended about 45 cm to 60 cm above the bench – either by hanging from chains or by using mounting brackets attached to a shelf or bench. The downward airflow is more consistent over the entire bench. Overhead Ionisation is ideal for areas where bench space is limited.
Compressed Gas Point of Use Ionisers
Also known as forced air ionisers, they are used for neutralising electrostatic charges to eliminate attraction, visual imperfections and contamination issues by dislodging charged dust and debris. They use compressed air or nitrogen to neutralise static charges in localised areas – they are a quick “point-and-shoot” option. The main advantage of this type is that the user has the benefit of a strong air blast (20 to 100 P.S.I.) to help dislodge contamination, while the ionisation in the air stream eliminates the static attraction of the particles at the same time. Hand-held air nozzle types will usually have a trigger or push-button to activate the air and ion flow, while the stationary-mounted type is frequently remote controlled with a foot pedal, photo sensor or some other switch mechanism.
Key Features
Fast Charge Decay
Many Desco Europe Ionisers use a superior technology that provides a fast charge decay time (< 2 seconds) that is maintained over time with proper care. View the comparison charts to compare.
Auto Emitter Cleaner
Offset voltage can shift due to the build-up of particles on emitter points. The SCS Ionisers 9110-NO and 9310-NO are designed with a built-in automatic emitter points cleaner to periodically clean the emitter points therefore saving manual work and time.
Low Balance
All EMIT Fan Ionisers have a balance of 10 V or less, the Zero Volt Ionizer has a balance of ± 3 V.
Ergonomic
The Desco 19595 Viper Ion Gun is light weird and has a long handle-trigger to reduce stress on the operator’s fingers and allow for extended use.
Auto Balance
The EMIT Chargebuster and Zero Volt Ionisers utilise feedback from an internal sensor on the grill to continuously adjust the output to maintain balance.
Auto-Feedback
The EMIT Chargebuster and Zero Volt Ionisers will automatically shut down and alarm (audibly and visually) if the voltage supply drops.

Test and Monitoring Equipment
Ionisation Verification Kit
Includes and utilises the 19442 Digital Static Field Meter. A portable kit for the in-house testing of offset voltage and discharge times of air ionizers and electrostatic fields. It is designed to make measurements that correspond to those made by using a charged plate monitor per IEC 61340-4-7 and ANSI/ESD STM3.1
Portable Charge Plate Monitor
A handheld device designed to check the offset voltage and discharge times of air ionizers per ANSI/ESD SP3.3, ESD TR53, and IEC TS 61340-5-4. The meter's integrated timer and its portability will save time in compliance verification. The 180-degree rotary head allows the operator to read the display at various angles in hard-to-reach areas.
EM Aware Monitor
Monitors three key parameters of ESD problems: ESD events, change in static voltage field, and ionizer performance. Captures the balance and discharge times of ionizers using Static Management Program (SMP)
