Question If ESD sensitive PCBs are stored on dissipative racks and the racks are on BIG metal shelves, should the shelves be connected to a common point ground? - Anonymous, Montreal, Quebec, Canada
Answer Yes, grounding the metal shelves would be advised, assuming you are following other ESD guidelines when handling or transporting the trays or devices. That is, all personnel coming into contact with the trays should be grounded (at the same potential as the shelves), prior to coming into near contact with the devices/trays, via use of foot grounders or ESD shoes in conjunction with a conductive ESD grounded floor. This will minimize ESD events around the ESD sensitive devices.
